trials of the road

Coffee: Once White Castle and Hardees appear at the same rest area you can no longer find Dunkin Donuts. Once you have no DD you have no readily available coffee - especially if you prefer iced as I do. So next it's Starbucks which I now find myself stopping for even if I just started driving 5 minutes ago because I have learned that Starbucks appears only every 150 miles.

Missouri: It never ends. It goes on forever. It is like being caught in a whirlpool and all you can do is hope that you will whirl to the outside and find yourself spit out into Oklahoma.

Oklahoma: I love Oklahoma.

Who knew there was any place that had a Starbucks per capita value of less than .6

Wait...maybe one every 150 miles still works out to that...

Or maybe it's actually a starbucks per vote for democrats...

It's an alternate world when you see a billboard that reads "Democrats - fix Katrina before you break Iraq".
My faith in humankind was redeemed by the "peace now" spray painted across a subsequent overpass (although the roadkill on the side of the road makes me wonder about the fate of the messenger and whether the words meant something else).

Let's try this again. Without the typos.

Once we stayed in Tulsa and the reception guy (clearly a student from his reading choices) at the Motel 6 looked conspiratorially left and right when we asked him about good restaurants in the area, then whispered "you guys want vegetarian?" The place was great, chinese foods made with mock-meat (wheat gluten).

To balance this out, we saw a recipe featured on a morning news show the next day: Spiscuits, prepared from Spam and Bisquick.

What does Oklahoma got that Nebraska does not? Or have you just not experienced OK yet? Maybe you're going through the little handle part and it doesn't seem so daunting?
Good luck with Texas. Now that Molly Ivins is gone there's nothing left worth noting...

I somehow got to miss Nebraska and I can't wait to show you all the fun I had in Texas. Missouri though...it's better not to talk about it - i'm still traumatized.
